Dear Parents,
First, thank you to all the parents who came to the Hall of Flame with us!
Mrs. Johnson and I would like to take a moment to address our reading program. AR or Accelerated Reader, is the program we use to monitor reading and comprehension. Each student took a STAR test at the beginning of the year to find out what their reading level is. All of the books in the school library that are AR books are labeled with the book level and point value as well as the quiz number for taking quizzes. Your children are encouraged to find a book in their level and take the quiz when they are finished. All quizzes are to be taken in class. Each student also has a goal to reach for the first quarter. Most goals fall at about the 6 point range. AR reading should be recorded on the reading logs at home. Please support your child's reading by giving them a place to read without distractions if possible. Have your child read out loud to you or take turns reading out loud. This will help to build fluency in reading as well as comprehension. If you have books at home your child would like to read, you can go to AR Book Find to enter the title of the book. This will give you the book level and point value. We are asking that students only read AR books until their quarter goal is met.
We will be beginning multiplication soon! If possible please pick up a set of flashcards to keep at home or in the car to support the student's learning.
Thanks again!

Dear Parents,
We are off to a great start! I have had the pleasure of getting to know all of your children in the past month and we have a great classroom dynamic. Our unit on communities went great! Now we will begin a science unit on properties. We will be looking at gasses, liquids, solids, energy, and force. There are several experiments that we will conduct. The first will be looking at water, a liquid, and how it can become a gas, steam, and a solid, ice. Our observations will be recorded in our science journals and hopefully help students to understand the processes that elements go through.
In math we will continue with addition and subtraction, moving into adding and subtracting 3 or more digit numbers. All the work students did reviewing basic math facts last month really showed on the great test scores we got back. Mastery of facts really helps students to compute the problems quickly and without errors.
Fire safety week falls in September and to reinforce what we will be discussing in class, the whole third grade will be taking a field trip to the Hall of Flame in Phoenix. Look for permission slips to come home in our family envelopes. We welcome all parent volunteers who wish to come and enjoy the museum. The cost for an adult is just $3. All that we ask is that you are current on your volunteer safety classes for the year.
Keep up the great work supporting you students at home, it really shows!
Thank you,
Ms. Wolf August
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the new school year! I would like to take a moment to introduce myself and let you know a little about me. My name is Ms. Wolf and this is my first year teaching. I am very excited to have this opportunity to learn and grow with your children. I am a graduate of Northern Arizona University and have a degree in elementary education with an early childhood endorsement. I have been working in the educational field for over 6 years now. I worked as an aide in a third grade classroom for 3 years. I know that I am well prepared to have a classroom of my own.
Third grade is a very exciting year for students. We will work on expanding all the knowledge they have built up from previous grades. We will be studying a variety of topics over the course of the year. I am the math teacher for both third grade classes. This month we will be reviewing addition and subtraction, place value, and word problems. During August we will focus on social studies. Our unit will be on communities, we will discuss the similarities and differences in urban, suburban, and rural areas. Mrs. Johnson will be teaching the reading classes for both classes and will let you know what the students will cover.
I will keep you posted on our weekly happenings on the home page, it will let you know of tests, events, and reminders. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to email me or send a note with your child. I am available for meetings both before and after school, let me know what works best for you! I am looking forward to a great school year for all of us.
Thank you for your support!
Ms. Wolf
